Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area
This recreational area is only 45 minutes east of Edmonton and offers more than 170 kilometers of trails. Take in a relaxing trail or challenge yourself in more difficult terrain, all the while enjoying the area’s scenic forests, pastures and wetlands. This 97-square kilometre site is a ‘Day-use only’ recreational area and is a horseback rider’s paradise offering more than 85 kilometers of equestrian trails. Delight in the area’s diverse wildlife – beaver, snowshoe hare, moose, elk and deer are common, as are a wide variety of birds such as grouse, great blue heron and the “at risk” trumpeter swan. There are four staging areas: Waskehegan, Islet Lake, Central and Blackfoot. Have plenty of parking as well as picnic shelters and privies. Trails are equiped with covered rest stops and heated shelters. Study your maps and come prepared with extra gear such as dry clothing, food and a flashlight.
